What is a vegetarian?

They don't eat fish. Fish ... is meat. They don't eat chicken. Chicken ... is meat. They don't eat the occasional steak. Steak ... is meat. People who eat fish, chicken and meat are NOT vegetarians. They are meat eaters.

I always look forward to meeting fellow vegetarians, so I get quite annoyed when someone tells me that so and so is a vegetarian. And then I discover that so and so actually eats meat. Being a vegetarian is a comittment. Saying you are a vegetarain but eat meat, is like being married but feeling free to have sex with other people.

Vegetarians come in a few categories:

  • Vegans
  • Lacto Vegetarians
  • Lacto Ovo Vegetarians

As explained in the last paragraph, Pescatarians are meat eaters. My definition of meat is something that has eyes and can move. That includes shellfish.

You do also get Fruitarians. They will only eat the fruit of a plant. They would eat grains, tomatoes and peanut butter. They would not eat lettuce and onions. You have to think hard about which part of the plant is the fruit and seed bearing part. I would agree with anyone that this is a tricky group to feed.

Essentially if you serve fruit and vegetables you are 100% safe with all categories of vegetarians. Obviously not Fruitarians. You may be able to serve dairy and you might even be able to serve eggs. To put that in context, cake or pasta are often made with eggs. Jellies are made from gelatine. So there are some surprising foods to bear in mind.

Most people can't imagine how I manage to find food to eat. My meals are based around fruit, vegetables and nuts. I always include a vegetarian protein source at every meal. It's actually not that hard. It requires you to look at food with new eyes.

Eschewing meat has many advantages:

  1. You are avoiding the hormone and antibiotic ridden produce of mass scale animal farming that is reputed to be the cause of multiple modern ills.
  2. You will easily make your five a day target.
  3. All vegetables, apart from nuts, olives and avocados, are low in fats.

Think along the lines of stir fries, stuffed vegetables, hearty salads or baked vegetables. Easy protein accompaniments would be soy meat substitutes, haloumi cheese, nut burgers or an omlette.
